An Actor’s Challenge

Paloma Chavez

DC_Govind-Arun-Ahuja.JPGWhy do you practice yoga? For some people, it’s because they want to feel better, whereas for others they want to look better. Most of the time, though, it’s a combination of both – and we all know how satisfying a regular yoga practice can be.

That’s why so many actors practice yoga – being and looking fit in both mind and body is absolutely vital to their careers.

Yoga Before the Flight

Christina Souza Ma

CSM_Sun-Salutations-before-flight.JPGRecently, I had to take yet another flight with my son, who’s not yet two years old but is already becoming a frequent flyer! Unlike the last frustrating time, however, when I had to do everything but jump through hoops just to get my son and me on the plane, I was determined to be better prepared this time – just in case the airlines decided to change their check-in procedure or come up with countless other ways to make life challenging.

So the first thing I did when I booked my flight was to draw up a list of questions for the airline staff.

A Pain in the Neck

Paloma Chavez

DC_neck-problem.jpgFeeling stressed and in pain? There are so many factors that can cause us to feel tension – anything from a having bad day to the pressure of dealing with the recent downturn in the economy. And these stresses can so easily manifest themselves in our bodies. Even with a regular yoga practice, we are susceptible to nagging aches, pains, and lingering tensions – all of which can be difficult to relieve.

Rise to the Challenge

Paloma Chavez

DC_Seva-Challange.JPGPoverty is all around us. Perhaps some of us are fortunate enough not to have it right on our doorstep, but we’ve all seen and read about the devastating conditions that many people live in. And I’m sure, like me, you’ve often wondered what you – as only one person – can do to help alleviate all this suffering.

A Stress Relieved on Duty

Paloma Chavez

DC_military-yoga.jpgAre you in the military forces or do you know anyone who is? Well, how does the idea of yoga for the Military sound to you?

Okay, so now you’re probably wondering how on earth yoga would fit into the military forces. Think about it – we all sometimes feel like we’re carrying a huge boulder of tension on our shoulders throughout the day.

Business and Children

Christina Souza Ma

CSM_business-Children.jpgSo many people ask me “How do you do it? How do you run your company with your child by your side daily?” And these are people who know that running YogaHub is not the only business I oversee, but just one of many.

My answer? I just do what it takes. Don’t I get tired? Don’t I get frustrated with him as he gets into anything and everything at this wonderful stage of his life? Don’t I sometimes feel like I need some time to myself?

Taxing Yoga

Paloma Chavez

DC_Taxing-Yoga.JPGDo you own a yoga studio? If so, how would you feel if you were told you’d have to start charging a sales tax? Yes, that’s right – the tax man cometh!

Charging their clients a sales tax is the dilemma that yoga studios and teachers in the state of Washington are currently facing. Recently, the Department of Revenue in that state notified the owners of yoga studios that they would have to start charging a sales tax. Why? Because it was decided that yoga is considered a form of exercise and therefore, under the law, it is subject to sales tax.

Taking Your Heart to the Mat

Paloma Chavez

DC_OneYoga.jpgWhat can a single group of yoga practitioners do to help relieve world poverty? Plenty – but with lots of support. On November 16, throughout North America, conscientious yoginis will be putting their hearts to their mats as they join OneYoga to bring awareness and funds to help end extreme poverty.

The organizers of OneYoga, in partnership with ChristmasFuture, are asking local and national yoga studios to encourage their yoga communities to get together in their local studios for a one-day fundraising event.

Pink Ribbon Yoga Supplies

Paloma Chavez

DC_Pink-Ribon.jpgJust because Breast Cancer Awareness month has just passed doesn’t mean you can’t continue to let others know of your support for this worthwhile cause. The Breast Cancer Site is a daily reminder that we can continue to make a difference simply by accessing the site and clicking on their “give free mammograms” box. You could also make a donation to any of the worthy breast cancer organizations.

But what else can you do to show that you care?
